How the list is built

We started from the Rating Surveyors’ Association’s public member list and the firms that appear in published Valuation Tribunal decisions, then kept only firms whose own website offers a business rates service. Each one is checked against Companies House; merged firms are merged and closed firms removed. Firms that work for the Valuation Office or the tribunals are left out.

What the labels mean

Boutique and regional firms are the ones most likely to act for a single shop, office or unit, so we list them first (57 of the 72). National practices mostly act for portfolios and several publish a minimum rateable value — you can hide them with one click.

“Tribunal cases” counts published Valuation Tribunal decisions in the last 12 months where the firm represented the ratepayer — the same record as the Chartered Surveyor League Table. Most cases settle before a hearing, so no cases is not a mark against a firm.

What we won’t do

• Recommend one firm over another, or rank by who pays.
• Pass your details to a surveyor. You contact them, on their site.
• List unregulated agents, or any individual’s personal details.
• Charge a firm to appear. No firm pays to be listed.
