A discount for smaller properties. Below a certain Rateable Value you pay nothing at all; above that there's a sliding-scale ('tapered') discount up to a higher threshold.
Small Business Rate Relief (SBRR) reduces — and for the smallest properties removes — the business rates bill for eligible single-property businesses in England. As a general guide, properties with a rateable value below around £12,000 pay nothing, and there is a tapered (sliding-scale) discount between roughly £12,000 and £15,000. These thresholds are set by government and can change, so confirm the current figures for your rating list.
You normally qualify only if you use one business property, though there are limited exceptions for a main property plus additional very small ones. It is usually not applied automatically — you claim it through your local council, which is the authority that sends and collects your bill.
One important limit: if SBRR already brings your bill to zero, there is nothing further to reclaim by challenging your rateable value — a bill cannot go below £0. Checking your value can still be worth doing for the future, because relief can taper away or your circumstances can change.
